The complete text of all seven George Eliot novels
George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans (1819 - 1880), the youngest of five children born to the estate manager of Arbury Hall, near Nuneaton, Warwickshire, UK.
She spent much of her working life as a literary editor and essayist, but is best remembered for her novels of provincial English and European life, focusing on bold human issues of justice and morality, and was one of the most popular English novelists of her time.
Shunned by her family for her unconventional marriage to George Lewes and rejection of her Christian faith, she died suddenly of a kidney disease in December 1880.
She published seven novels in her lifetime, all under her pseudonym which had become no secret in her later years. The complete text of all of them can be found on this web site.
